The Central Bank (BDL) said it will issue a new banknote of the LL100,000 denomination on the occasion of the centennial of Greater Lebanon declaration.
The new bill will be put in circulation on Dec. 7, 2020. It will be of the same size as existing LL100,000 banknotes which will remain in circulation.
BDL has been increasing lira issuance lately mainly due to a rise in deposit withdrawals in lira even for deposits denominated in foreign currencies. Currency in circulation jumped 1.5 times to LL24.3 trillion ($16.1 billion at the official exchange rate of LL1507.5) at the end of October 2020 compared with the end of 2019.
