Ten to 12 hours of electricity
supply expected by year-end

Increase due to inputs from Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt

Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that he expects electricity supply provided by Electricité du Liban (EDL) to reach ten to 12 hours per day by year-end.

The increase will be the result of fuel oil imports from Iraq, a 240 MW supply of electricity from Jordan, and natural gas from Egypt. Electricity generation will increase especially at the Deir Ammar power plant which will be supplied by Egyptian gas.

“We are close to signing the agreement with Egypt. This will be immediately followed by starting production at Deir Ammar,” Mikati said.

Mikati said that US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, who was on a visit to Beirut yesterday, and World Bank officials, have been reassuring with regard to facilitating the Jordanian and Egyptian inputs.

“Financing is available and ready,” said the Prime Minister.

“We are working in parallel on a permanent solution to the electricity issue. I hope it will gain the approval of all Lebanese sides,” he said.
