The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has launched a project to build a second terminal at the Beirut Rafik Hariri International Airport at a total cost of more than $122 million.

The new terminal will be allocated for chartered and low-cost flights and will be able to handle 3.5 million additional passengers per year, said Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamieh. The project will create 500 jobs and employment for another 2,000 in related sectors.

The cost of the Terminal 2 project will be borne by the private sector through the Lebanese Air Transport (LAT), Hamieh said. Once the project is completed after four years from now, the ownership of the facilities will be transferred to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, he said.

The cost covers design, construction, equipping and maintenance work, as well as operating the facilities. Terminal 2 will be operated by the Irish airport management company daa International.

The government plans to boost the airport’s capacity to 20 million passengers per year by 2030 from around eight million passengers at present.
