Freight handled at the Port of Tripoli (PoT), including imports and exports, jumped by 53 percent to 3.6 million tons in 2022, according to PoT statistics.

Exports from PoT soared 2.4 times to 1.5 million tons. Imports increased 21 percent to 2 million tons.

Ahmad Tamer, Director General of PoT, said that the growth in freight movement is not related to the situation in the Port of Beirut and that imports and exports of merchandise have increased. He said that PoT is distinguished by the important size of bulk cargo it handles.

According to Customs, imports in terms of value through PoT soared 44 percent to $2 billion in 2022. Exports also increased and rose by six percent to $308 million. A review of the ten-year period 2013-2022 shows that both exports and imports in terms of value reached peaks in 2021 and 2022.

The number of cargo ships visiting PoT increased 21 percent to 886 vessels in 2022.

Tamer said that the port’s revenues increased to around $18 million in 2022. He said it is difficult to assess the 2021 revenues in dollars due to the chaotic foreign exchange market and that PoT’s revenues usually don’t fall below $15 million.
