The Price Index Committee (PIC) has raised the minimum wage in the private sector to LL9 million ($84 at today’s market rate) per month from LL4.5 million, said caretaker Minister of Labor Mustafa Bayram.

The transportation allowance was also raised to LL250,000 ($2.3) for each day of attendance at work. The ceiling for sickness and maternity compensation paid by employers to the National Social Security Fund was also doubled.

These increases will be revised in line with fluctuations in the exchange rate in order to ensure a fair income to wage earners, according to Bayram.

The minimum wage was LL675,000 before the crisis and was equivalent to nearly $450 at the previous official exchange rate.

PIC, which is officially mandated to adjust salaries and wages in the private sector, is composed of the Minister of Labor and representatives of workers and employers.
