A tender for building a gas-operated power generator in Deir Amar energy facility in Beddawi, was won by Spanish firm Abener. The company offered a price of $0.136 per one kilowatt-hour. The contract has not been signed yet, pending Cabinet’s approval. Abener was one of four shortlisted companies, alongside a Cypriot, a Chinese, and a Turkish firm.

The budget allocated for the project is around $700 million. The plan involves building a 450 MW gas-operated generator. Construction will take up to two years starting the contract signing.

Eight companies initially applied for the tender. Among the applicants were a consortium between a Kuwaiti company, Ghanem, and a Lebanese firm, Zerock.

The new plant will boost the total output of the facility. The present power plant in Beddawi operates on gas and currently provides some 435 MW.

The government intends to procure liquid natural gas. The only source of natural gas at present, a branch from Arab Gas Pipeline which goes through Syria, has been unable to deliver gas since 2010.
