A financing agreement signed between the European Union (EU) and the government was recently ratified. The agreement aims at funding a program called ‘Support to Reforms-Environmental Governance’ (StREG). The objective of this program is to empower the Ministry of Environment to plan and implement environmental policies.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $10 million. The term of the project is six years. The agreement defined ten priority areas to tackle throughout the project period. These include strengthening environmental inspection and policy enforcement, managing air pollution, promoting environment-friendly products, and activating the role of the Ministry.
A budget of $3.8 million will be dedicated for activities related to strengthening environmental inspection and policy enforcement, and $2 million for improving the administrative capacity of the Ministry of Environment. Other funds will be used for developing and introducing environmental fiscal instruments to the legislative process, and enhancing the environmental policy.
