The Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) has kick started a study on sustainable development in Akkar and the highlands of Dinnieh and Hermel. The study, funded by the European Union (EU) through a €200,000 ($266,000) grant, aims at outlining a 20-year action plan for the region.

Serge Yazigi, General Manager of Yazigi Atelier, the main consultant on the project, said: “The study will determine the key sustainable projects needed by the communities of these areas and identify the budgets required and the funding sources.” The proposal was presented by the CDR and has already been approved by the Cabinet.

A similar study for Tyr and its vicinity will be launched soon. The scope of the projects extends to various sectors including agriculture, real estate, infrastructure, health, education, and environment.

“Among the project’s priority objectives is setting guidelines for protecting the natural reserve that extends from Dinnieh and Hermel against urban growth in the area,” Yazigi said.

Yazigi Atelier is heading a team of experts that includes German-based GFA Consulting Group and ELARD, a local environmental consultancy firm. “Once studies are concluded, the EU and the CDR will help local residents attract investments to carry out the required projects,” he said.
