A new Lebanese University (LU) campus is under construction in Rasmaska Talet El Sbat, South Tripoli. The campus will host eight faculties. It will have an area of 135,000 square meters with a capacity for 22,000 students.

The first phase of the project involves launching two faculties - the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Arts and Architecture. This phase will be finalized in two months. The faculties will start receiving admissions in September 2013. Until now, the northern faculties had been housed in old buildings and army barracks. “Once the premises in the new campus are operational, the old ones will be automatically closed,” said Ali El Ali, Director General at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Third Branch (North). Construction of the two premises was undertaken by a Turkish company at a cost of around $50 million.

Works to build the Faculty of Sciences have also been launched recently. The construction of this faculty will cost $36 million.

The whole project will be finalized by 2020. The campus will also include faculties for Health, Law and Political Sciences, Business Administration, Literature, and Social and Human Sciences. The project’s total cost hems around $180 million. El Ali said: “Studies for the project were finalized back in 2003 and the cost was estimated at $93 million, but the funds needed to be doubled because of the increase in the construction cost.” The project will be managed and supervised by the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) which will also be in charge of securing funding sources. The Saudi Islamic Development Bank is co-funding the project.
