President inaugurates Chamber of Commerce

Overhaul to help offer services to
15,000 members

President Michel Sleiman inaugurated the renovated Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Beirut and Mount Lebanon (CCIA-BML) on Monday January 6, 2014. The renovation included a complete refurbishment towards an ecologically-green premises.

He said: “The Chambers of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture are playing a significant role in the economy.” The CCIAB has concluded many agreements with different countries in order to move the economy forward. The renovation would help the Chamber’s 15,000 member companies enhance trade activities and investments, he said.

Nicolas Nahhas, Minister of Economy and Trade, said: “This renovation will help the Chamber keep track of the latest developments in trade as well as help the private sector access the international markets.”

One of the major improvements pulled out was making the building technology friendly by utilizing security systems and networking facilities. Nayla Mouawad, former Member of Parliament, said: “It is important to introduce technology to the Chamber and we hope that this would be the case for all official administrations.” The conference room was also restored and a new Business Club had been innovated.

Chairman of CCIAB, Mohammad Choucair, said: “We have achieved many projects in previous years such as FARO, the arbitration services, as well as developed other services.”
According to him, the renovation of the building was made possible through the financial support of the private sector and Chamber members. The cost of the renovation totaled $6.1 million.
Nicolas Chammas, Head of Beirut Traders Association, said: “The Chamber was able to accomplish this step in the most difficult political and economic circumstances. CCIAB is major player in the economic bodies and this building would complement their role.”

Walid Daouk, Minister of Information, said: “The renovation is a glimpse of hope because the private sector is an integral part of national economy.”
