The construction of a potable water distribution network and reservoir was kicked off on January 23 by the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Establishment (BMLWE).
These water works are part of the first phase of a $370 million project to convey water from the Awali River to the Greater Beirut area. The project is funded by the European Investment Bank and BMLWE.
Bulgarian firm Vodokanalproekt-Metalproekt Ingeneering AD was awarded the tender for phase one, valued at $22.8 million.
The firm will extend 120 kilometers of water networks and the construction of pumping stations and 15 reservoirs, with a total capacity of 23,000 m3.
When completed, the conveyor will carry 40 million m3 of water per year to a reservoir connected to all areas of Greater Beirut. It will benefit 250,000 households in Amrousieh, Aramoun, Khaldeh, Choueifat, Damour, Nehmeh, Kfarshima, Umara, Kobbeh, and Zakka.
Currently, the bulk of Beirut’s drinking water is transported from Jeita.
