The Policy Statement announced last week by the ‘National Interest Cabinet’ and distributed on March 18 in its last adaptation, highlights a number of economic priorities mainly tourism, energy, and labor.

“The government is aware of public finance problems, which it will work on and take all possible measures to stimulate primary economic sectors, of which tourism is at the forefront. The sector suffers from a sharp drop that can be addressed through conducting talks with business owners and syndicates,” the statement said.

The government will follow up on the salary scale draft law, as well as draft laws related to retirement and elderly social security.

The statement said: “The National Interest Cabinet will give special attention to energy by pledging to continue and rush the measures related to the exploration and production qualification rounds.” The Cabinet will work on speeding the process to confirm its maritime borders, especially in areas of conflict with Israel.

According to the statement, these urgent economic matters require filling up many of the vacant public positions. “The government will set clear mechanisms to deal with Syrian refugees who are burdening the country  and who have drastically affected the security, political, social, and economic conditions,” it said.

The Cabinet promised to implement recommendations by the International Support Group for Lebanon. “The government will approve projects and programs that aim at limiting the economic and social repercussions resulting from the Syrian crisis and the funding mechanism through the World Bank fund.”
