Landfill to serve Baalbek-Hermel governorate

The terms of reference for a project to develop a landfill in Baalbek City have been completed, and a tender will soon be launched. The $7 million waste management project is supported by the European Investment Bank.

The overall cost of the project is $10 million. The project is expected to serve 460,000 individuals or 40,000 households. This includes the construction and equipping of the plant.

“Once the landfill is complete, we will be able to operate our newly constructed waste sorting facility,” said Omar al –Solh, Deputy Mayor of Baalbek Municipality. The landfill will be completed within six months and a tender will be held to choose a company to operate the plant and landfill for three years.

The landfill will hold about 30 percent of the waste that will remain, while 70 percent will be recycled. “This 30 percent will be buried in the landfill,” he said.

The waste sorting plant has a capacity of 300 tons, per day. “Currently, Baalbek City and the surrounding municipalities produce 150 tons of waste per day. So, we are asking nearby interested municipalities to benefit from this facility,” he said.
