New theatres attract lion’s share

Moviegoers grew by eight percent annually, during 2014, , to 3.7 million according to data compiled from various theatres. The growth rate in 2014 and 2013 was the same.

VOX Cinemas at the Beirut City Center was the number one theatre with 570,405 visitors. It grabbed 15 percent of the total market share. Operating since April 2013, VOX easily made its way to the top as the largest theater in the country, with 455 seats and four VIP theaters It begins show times from 10 a.m.

The newest entry, Cinemacity in the Beirut Souks, came in as a close second, with nearly 14 percent of the visitors. It was followed by Cinemacity – Dora, with nearly 12 percent.

Among the chains, Grand Cinemas still tops the list with nearly 32 percent of the market share, or a little over 1.1 million visitors. However, the chain lost around nine percent of its viewers, compared to last year. Cinemacity with its two outlets in the Beirut Souks and City Mall - Dora, came in second place with over 950,000 visitors and around 26 percent of the market. In third place, Empire theatres had around nine percent of the market. The remaining shares were distributed between Cinemall in Le Mall Dbayeh, Zahle Star Gate, Planete Abraj, and Prime on Bliss theatres.
