The Ministry of Telecom (MoT) announced today the companies that will participate in the mobile tender expected to take place on September 8.
The companies are English Vodafone, the world’s second largest mobile operator, with 465 million subscribers and a yearly turnover of $35 billion. Other applicants include French Orange Telecom, Turkcell, Kuwaiti Zain, Deutsche Telekom, and Malaysian Maxis.
The Bids Department of the Central Inspection Board refused Egypt Orascom Telecom’s application as the company’s operations do not match the tender’s criteria.
According to Minister of Telecommunications, Boutros Harb, the number of international companies participating in the tender shows the interest in our market and its potential. “We hope that the companies will compete to improve the telecom sector and help it step into the 4G and then the 5G era,” he said.
Harb said that the mobile tender is the first step of implementing the MoT’s 2020 digital vision.
