EDL announced that the existing shortage in power supply is likely to increase as a result of the disturbances in Egypt. In a communiqué issued today, EDL said that the added shortage is due to disruption in the delivery of gas from Egypt to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon after the pipeline that carries the gas had been blown up in Egypt. This has prompted Jordan, which depends on Egyptian gas supplies to generate its own electricity, to unexpectedly disconnect Syria and Lebanon from the Egyptian electricity grid that supplies power to all three countries. “Jordan, thus, became the only beneficiary from the Egyptian electricity grid,” said the EDL statement. The additional power disruption will not affect the Greater Beirut area, it said.
