Fresh dollar deposits increased in the first eight months of 2024 by around $700 million to nearly $4.2 billion, according to banking sources.

The liquid foreign reserve assets held by the Central Bank (BDL) also grew this year and rose by $1.1 billion to reach $10.4 billion by mid-August, as per BDL data. This represents an increase of 11 percent compared to the end of 2023.

The fresh dollar accounts, which were authorized by the Central Bank in 2020, stood at $2 billion in 2022. Holders of these deposits, who mainly include businesses, individuals, and NGOs, could use them to carry out all kinds of banking transactions such as transfers abroad and cash withdrawals.
