Business leaders from all over the country called the government to revoke its decision to increase the salaries of public and private sector employees. They dubbed the decision as “illegal” and threatened to resort to the ‘Shura Council’ to invalidate it.

Hundreds of the private sector’s business leaders gathered at BIEL on Thursday (October 20) to contest the Cabinet’s decision and to declare their openness to dialogue with the labor unions. The gathering, which boasted the title ‘Save the Economy’, included representatives of the economic bodies of the tourism, banking, industrial, and trade sectors.

The economic bodies had filed an official request to the Cabinet to rerun a dialogue based on the approach of the Price Indicator Committee. The request however was rejected by the General Confederation of Labor Unions, which called for the amendment of the decree to include all salary segments.

The wage decree, which will be issued within the next few days, raises the minimum wage from LL500,000 to LL700,000. Wages between LL1 million and LL1.8 million would be increased by LL300,000.
