Dr. Marwan Iskandar, a leading economist during more than half a century, passed away today at the age of 87. He was also an author, consultant, banker, and advisor to heads of state.
Born in 1938, Dr. Iskandar pursued his education at the American University of Beirut and furthered his studies at Oxford University, laying a strong foundation for a career that would significantly influence Lebanon’s economic landscape.
A strong believer in the mission of Lebanon Opportunities, he wrote the main op-ed in the magazine’s inaugural issue, and subsequently was frequently featured in its articles and speaker at its conferences. He was one of the first endorsers of InfoPro's Economic Revival Plan which it prepared for its Leaders Club and wrote several times in its support.
InfoPro published two of his books: ‘The Bear Turns Tiger: Resurgent Russia’ (2009) and ‘Qatar’s Pursuits’ (2016).
Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Iskandar served as the chief economic commentator for the daily An-Nahar, providing insightful analyses that guided public understanding of complex economic issues. Between 1968 and 1974, he edited a weekly financial and economic review for the publication, establishing himself as a trusted voice in economic journalism.
Dr. Iskandar’s expertise was sought by leaders across the Middle East. He advised the ruler of Qatar from 1978 to 1982 and collaborated with the ministries of finance and information in three other Arab countries, offering strategic guidance on economic policies. In Lebanon, he intermittently advised President Amine Gemayel and three prime ministers, notably late Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, contributing to the nation’s economic planning and development.
As an author, Dr. Iskandar penned 24 books on economics and significant politico-economic events in the Middle East. Notably, he authored ‘Rafiq Hariri and the Fate of Lebanon’, providing an in-depth perspective on the late Prime Minister’s tenure and the economic reforms instituted under his leadership.
From 1981 to 2005, Dr. Iskandar edited and published 25 annual reviews of the Lebanese economy, demonstrating his commitment to documenting and analyzing the nation’s economic progress. He also participated in committees in 1984 and 1992 that prepared macro-economic programs aimed at enhancing Lebanon’s economic performance.
Dr. Iskandar had also several banking ventures. He co-founded two banks in Paris and served on the boards of Banque Pharaon & Chiha, Banque Credit National (Chairman 2010-2013), and Bank of Beirut. He accomplished the merging and acquisition of seven banks, in addition to several other banking activities.
Dr. Iskandar’s contributions extended to academia, where he shared his knowledge and mentored future economists. His work has been translated into numerous languages, reflecting the global recognition of his expertise.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Iskandar was known for his dedication to the betterment of Lebanon and the broader Middle East. His insightful analyses, strategic counsel, and unwavering commitment to economic development have left an indelible mark on the region.
Dr. Marwan Iskandar had lost his only son Samer less than six months ago. He is survived by his wife Mona Nammour.
