The Cabinet will convene a session today (November 7), attended by the Central Bank governor, to discuss a number of tax proposals. The drafts, recently submitted by the Ministry of Finance, suggest raising taxes on bank deposits, luxury items, alcohol, fees on construction permits, and public property violations.

If the taxes were approved, the Cabinet will refer to Parliament a draft law raising the wages of public sector employees.

Private sector representatives launched another protest against the public sector wage raise. “This is the final warning against the disastrous impact of the (public) salaries raise on the economy,” the economic bodies said on Tuesday.

The Syndical Coordination Committee, a coalition representing public sector employees and public and private school teachers, have threatened to stage a nationwide strike on Thursday if the Cabinet failed to endorse the salary scale bill in today’s session.
