BBAC has just spent around $30,000 redesigning and refurbishing the monument at Aley’s main entrance. The 11-meter-high monument, destroyed after long years of neglect, was redesigned by internationally renowned Lebanese artist Lena Kelekian, winner of the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal in the Olympic Fine Arts competition and the Olympics Torch that had made the journey from Torino, Italy to Beijing. The on-site execution of the project was carried out under the supervision of architect Hagop Sulahian, renowned for his restoration and city embellishment works. The works lasted for a total of about seven months: Six months in the artist’s studio, where 3200 pieces of ceramics were cut and assembled and another month for the installation on site. When viewed in its three-dimensional version, the monument portrays an upward movement representing freedom and rejuvenation.
