The Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) will launch a tender for the construction of a re-gasification station to treat natural gas in Deir Ammar on April 15.

Works will include building the Floating Storage and Re-gasification Unit (FSRU) and connecting it to the Deir Ammar power plant. The FSRU transforms liquid natural gas into a gaseous state so it can be transferred to power plants for generating electricity.

Zaher Sleiman, Oil and Gas Consultant at the MoEW, said the tender was preceded by studies conducted by US-based Poten & Partners and funded by the World Bank. “We are currently in the process of preparing the terms of reference,” said Sleiman.

The MoEW released an expression of interest for the FSRU project early in April. Thirteen prequalified companies were chosen by Poten & Partners. The companies have 100 days to present their offers.

The cost of building and connecting the floating terminal to the Deir Ammar plant reaches $200 million. “The process of vessel and pipeline construction will take around two years,” Sleiman said.
The FSRU is part of a major plan to build a coastal gas pipeline that interconnects major power plants across the country. The pipeline network will be annexed to the FSRU for treating imported liquefied gas.
