Public hospital in Tyr soon

Islamic Development Bank finances project

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), and the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) have signed an agreement to finance the construction and equipment of a public hospital in Tyr.

Akram Karam, Project Manager at CDR, said: “We finalized the studies requested for the Tyr Public Hospital project, and we will launch an international tender next week.” Karam said construction companies who have executed hospitals before should submit their offers within 60 days from the tender announcement. Companies who are shareholders in IDB could also take part in the tender.

The cost of investment in the hospital reaches $14 million. The cost of construction is around $9 million, while that of equipment and facilities is around $5 million. The project is within the framework of a $245-million agreement signed with the IDB for the reconstruction of Lebanon and ratified by the Parliament in March 2010.

The total built-up area of the hospital is 10,400 square meters, parted into four floors. The Tyr Public Hospital will comprise 70 beds, with the capacity to fit up to 100 beds. Karam said: “The new hospital will be the only public hospital in the region, although there are other private hospitals like Hiram Hospital and Najem Hospital.” He said: “The company should start the works after maximum three months from wining the tender.” Construction works should be finalized within 18 months.
