A new dairy factory is geared for the Southern village of Houla. The project was initiated by the Union of Municipalities of Jabal Amel. Construction works for the factory will start within two weeks.

“The factory is part of an agricultural plan to develop the livestock sector in the South, and to process excess milk production,” said Ali El Zein, President of the Union. He said: “We often have a hard time marketing our produce, especially in winter when most residents leave their villages. Establishing a dairy factory seemed to be the best option to manage the surplus.”

Around three tons of milk are produced daily by the 16 villages of Jabal Amel. El Zein said: “We chose to build the factory in Houla because the village has the highest production of milk.”

The Houla municipality will donate the land where the factory will be built. The construction and equipment are expected to cost around $200,000. The Council for the South will fund the factory’s construction, and the Union will pay for the equipment.

El Zein said: “The factory will help satisfy demand for dairy products from local villages.”

An agricultural cooperative will be established to manage the factory under the supervision of the Union. The cooperative will be responsible for marketing the dairy products and will create five jobs.
