Syrian restaurants in Beirut offer more than a taste of home

For the past nine months, Mohammed al-Halabi has been standing at the doors of Sit al-Sham, a restaurant at Beirut's Verdun-UNESCO intersection, wearing a burgundy- and gold-embroidered waistcoat and tarbush and inviting passers-by to taste dishes from Damascus and Aleppo.
Al-Halabi, a Syrian, fled to Lebanon seeking refuge from the conflict in his country.
"Opening the restaurant in Beirut and the request for me to join the team helps me earn a decent living for my family instead of waiting on aid and assistance from international and Lebanese humanitarian organisations," he said.
