The National Geothermal Assessment survey was launched on March 24 by the UNDP Cedro program. A three-dimensional geological and geothermal model has been developed to calculate heat coming from the core of the earth.
Minister of Energy and Water Arthur Nazarian said: “The challenges facing the power sector include reaching various power production sources.” According to the national power strategy approved in 2010, renewable energy plays a pioneering role. It calls for increasing the share of renewable energy production up to 12 percent by 2020.
The ministry had collaborated with the Cedro program to accomplish several studies including wind atlas, bioenergy strategy, hydraulic power, solar energy, and energy produced from waste.
“Geothermal power, unlike all renewable energies, is not affected by the climate. It is sustainable and does not have carbon emissions,” Nazarian said.
Geological, thermal, and hydraulic data was studied as part of the geothermal survey.
The plan to develop geothermal energy requires the production of 1.3 megawatts in 2020 and 6.5 megawatts five years later, representing 0.2 percent of the market’s need in 2025.
