The Council for Development and Reconstruction is in talks with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to fund the restoration and expansion of the al-Ghadir wastewater plant.
Al-Ghadir plant covers Beirut and Baabda cazas, or 40 percent of the population. It is currently partially operational. “The plant and connected networks, which are for pre-treatment, will be restored. It will also be transformed to conduct primary and secondary treatment of wastewater,” said Randa Nemr, Advisor for the wastewater sector at the Ministry of Energy and Water.
The estimated overall project cost is $400 million. The EIB and IDB are expected to participate by funding half the project.
“The loan agreement is currently being examined by the Government. It still needs to be referred to the Parliament for approval,” she said.
