The Ministry of Environment (MoE) launched the ‘Support to Reforms – Environmental Governance (StREG)’ program, funded by the European Union with a grant of $10 million.  

The StREG will be implemented over 3 years. The programme's global objective is to improve the environmental performance of the public sector through reforming environmental governance. Its specific objective is to enhance the national capacity, specifically at the MoE, to plan and execute environmental policy, including inspection, enforcement, and mainstreaming, by coordinating with key line-ministries, such as the Ministries of Interior and Municipalities, Justice, Finance, Energy and Water, Industry, and Agriculture.

The program will support the MoE in updating the draft National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP).

“This will be performed by preparing new procedures, training inspectors, and supporting the implementation of the inspection and enforcement procedures,” a statement by the EU said.

GFA Consulting Group GmbH (Germany) in partnership with Umweltbundesamt (UBA) (Austria), Euroconsult Mott MacDonald (The Netherlands), and Mott MacDonald Ltd. (United Kingdom) will provide the technical assistance team that will be in charge of implementing the above mentioned activities.

The program will contribute towards reinforcing the existing air quality monitoring network by providing the required equipment. It will also support the administrative capacity of the ministry by strengthening its management information system and functions. This will help making information held by the ministry more readily available and improve decision making, according to the statement.
