are back on track

West ring highway, road
restoration, and solid waste plans

The Municipality of Tripoli is putting a number of developments back on track, which had been placed on hold last year due to security clashes.

Mayor Amer Tayyeb El Rafei said: “Works into the West Ring Highway have resumed under the supervision of the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR).” The project’s contractor is Geneco. “We had some problems expropriating land but this hurdle is being removed,” he said.

The $56 million highway travels from al Mina to Beddawi. Half of the project has already been delivered. The consultants are Dar al Handasah, Nazih Taleb, and Mott Macdonald.

The municipality has allocated $3.7 million for the restoration of roads. “This amount covers 30 percent of the city’s need. We gave directions to increase the allocation,” he said.

Roads that will be restored are Kobbeh, Tebbaneh, Abi Samra, EL Tal, and Maarad.

El Rafei said: “The municipality is planning to remove the trash mountain that is receiving 400 tons of waste every day.” It is in talks with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to learn from its previous experience with the one in Saida. “We are going to visit the Municipality of Saida to learn about their success and how they have done it,” he said.
