The Cabinet has terminated the tender for two additional power barges. Both barges had the capacity to produce 425 megawatts.

Once the Ministry of Energy and Water has amended terms of reference, the Department of Tenders will relaunch the tender. The tender will call for plants that have the ability to produce 400 megawatts in the first three month, and an additional 400 megawatts over six months.

Bidders have two weeks to submit their offers to the Department. The Department will have ten days to announce the results before subsequently submitting them to the Cabinet.

Jean Ellieh, Director General at the Department, said: “Only Karadeniz has applied for the tender. By law, there should be at least two competing companies.”

Karadeniz, a Turkish firm, is currently providing electricity through two power ships, Fatmagul and Orhan Bey.

“The terms of reference should be amended in a way so more competitors can participate,” Ellieh said.

He said the first tender that was launched saw around 50 companies purchase the terms of reference and eight bidders participated in the tender. Only one was accepted.

The tender is part of the ministry’s latest plan to increase power production.
