Member of Parliament, Ghazi Youssef, accused the outgoing Minister of Telecommunication, Charbel Nahas, of committing violations in launching the Third Generation of C-phone that involve “theft and robbery.” Nahas announced last Friday that the deal was won by Ericsson and Huawei. “Three weeks ago, before the resignation of the government, Nahas summoned the representatives of the companies that participated in the bid and opened their tenders. He did so despite protests by the government’s representatives who argued that the meeting was illegal.” Youssef said that he was hardly surprised that Ericsson won the bid to modernize the Alfa network. “Last September, Nahas, accompanied by his cashier and advisor, Moussa Khoury, visited Stockholm, where he concluded a mysterious deal the details of which he kept from the Council of Ministers,” he said. Moreover, paying the costs of the modernization program involves another violation, said Youssef. The two operating companies, Meg one and Meg two, are owned by Alfa and MTC Touch respectively, which are public entities and their finances are thus subject to the scrutiny of the Council of Ministers, he said. “How long are we going to remain passive to acts of theft and robbery that this caretaker minister is committing?” said Youssef.
