June 27, 2011- Head of the Confederation of Public Drivers and Transport Unions, Bassam Tleis, attributed the rise in the price of the public car plates from L.L.6 million to L.L.31 million to the efforts of the public transport syndicates in its bid to put an end to violations and organize the sector. Tleis expected the price of public plates to sustain an upward trend which would further strengthen the sector.

Tleis announced, in a statement, that the decided subsidy for public drivers is on its way, after finding a legal framework for distributing the fund. He did not specify when the said subsidy will be distributed.

Tleis said the subsidy on fuel prices will go to those who actually pay for gasoline. The subsidy will go to the driver and not the car owner, or to the public transportation companies which cover the fuel prices and the wages of its drivers.

He said the syndicate has filled the required applications for around 40,000 drivers, including car and bus drivers.
